crossing big oceans...
independent of a crew

SAILING PROFILE:

ERIK AANDERAA

I am Erik Aanderaa and I have been sailing since age 11. With time I learned how to manage singlehanded sailing, and how to cross big oceans being independent of a crew.

Writing and telling adventurous stories has always been a great passion all the way from my childhood. And watching storytelling on film got me even more intrigued, as I found out the first time I got my hands on a very basic editing software. So in 2016 it was time to give it my best go to combine my two passions- sailing and storytelling on YouTube!

After producing several videos covering my expeditions my channel has grown, and has given me the opportunity to sail longer and in tougher conditions having all the best gear onboard for such passages.

My next plan is to visit east Greenland this year, and to explore the ice belts travelling along the coast. I will also visit one of the worlds most remote villages, Ittoqoortormiit in the world largest fjord- The Scoresby Sound.

To make this happen the incredible help from Raymarine plays a huge role.

I got my boat Tessie, a Contessa 35 in 2004. Then I only had the Raymarine ST 4000+, a drivebelt on the wheel connected to a display. Even though, it got me all singlehanded from Norway to south Spain and back in 2007. The system was way underpowered for my boat, but that way I was forced to learn how to manage sail trim not to overload the little drivebelt motor. I got pretty good at it with time!

In 2017 I upgraded to Raymarine EV 200 system with a linear drive, radar and 2 x E7D plotters. Compared to what I was used to, this opened up a whole new world for my singlehanded sailing. I could actually relax, even in bad weather. The boat just went on course no matter the conditions, even if the sail trim is off! The powers of this thing on a 35 feet boat is remarkable. Never did solo sailing get more fun than this, and most important of all- I feel safe!

After several more expedition videos I got to collaborate with Raymarine. Today a twin set of Axiom 9’’ Hybridtouch plotters connected to Quantum 2 Doppler radar stands for the navigation. A huge step up is also having an Axiom 7’’ next to my cabin bunk from where I can monitor the navigation in addition to having camera setup with Augmented Reality on deck for extra safety when relaxing inside.

So now I cant wait to get offshore on my next expedition to see it all go to work!
